Automating a driveway gate is more than bolting on a motor. The leaf, posts, power path, and how people enter the property all have to work together. Use this checklist before you commit so the result is smooth, safe, and sized for daily traffic.
Is the gate structure ready?
Operators add force and cycles. Sagging hinges, bent frames, or soft posts will fight the motor and wear out hardware. Sometimes a repair or rebuild is the right first step - then automation becomes reliable instead of a constant service call.
Swing vs slide on your site
Swing gates need a clear arc. Sliding gates need side run along the fence line. Slope, landscaping, and wind exposure all matter. Automation does not remove those constraints - it follows them.
Power, access, and safety
- Confirm a practical power route and disconnect location for the operator.
- Decide who needs access: remotes, keypads, intercoms, or smartphone-friendly options.
- Plan safety devices - photo eyes, edges, and tested force settings - from day one.
- Ask about UL 325-aware installation so the system matches modern safety expectations.
At Paul's IronWorks we design fabrication and automation together when possible - and we can also evaluate an existing gate for a safe upgrade. Start with a free estimate and we will map the options for your driveway.
